About Us

We empower and uplift Black scholars.

The mission of The Hooded Type is to empower and uplift Black scholars on their journey to achieving graduate and doctoral degrees through tailored support and mentorship. Our goal is increase the number of Black PhDs.

How It All Started

Dr. Julillian Davis initiated The Hooded Type out of a profound recognition of the disparities and obstacles Black scholars and researchers face in academia. Drawing from her own experiences navigating the academic landscape, she understands the importance of guidance, support, and representation in fostering success.

Motivated by a commitment to equity and inclusivity, Dr. Jill established The Hooded Type to provide a structured platform for aspiring Black academics to access resources, mentorship, and community. With only approximately 6% of Black individuals holding PhDs in the United States, she recognizes the urgency of addressing this disparity. She aims to empower the next generation of Black academics, amplifying their voices and contributions within higher education and beyond.

Hooding Ceremony

a special event that is often part of a graduation or commencement ceremony for students receiving advanced degrees, such as master’s degrees, doctorates, and certain professional degrees. During the ceremony, each graduate is presented with an academic hood, which is placed over their head and draped around their shoulders by a faculty member or mentor.

Academic Hood

a distinctive piece of regalia that includes colors representing the graduate’s field of study and the institution from which they are graduating. The ceremony symbolizes the graduate’s transition from student to scholar or professional in their chosen field. It is a way of recognizing the graduates’ academic achievements and celebrating their accomplishments.

Hooded

the act of receiving an academic hood during a graduation or commencement ceremony. This process usually takes place in a hooding ceremony, particularly for graduates earning advanced degrees such as master’s degrees or doctorates. It is a recognition of the graduate’s hard work and academic achievements.

Dissertation

a robust, formal written document often presenting original research on a specific topic and research question. It involves extensive research, critical analysis, and synthesis of existing literature and generates new knowledge through experimentation, data collection, or theoretical exploration. A dissertation often contributes significantly to the academic community's understanding of a particular subject or field.
